UPDATE: Squirrel named cause of power outage in Bellingham over the weekend

6/15/26 12:15 PM Update: PSE spokesperson Melanie Coon said that the State Street Substation had tripped offline after a squirrel came into contact with the equipment connecting the substation to neighborhood lines. Power was restored to the majority of customers a little before 10 a.m. after PSE switched operations. It is unclear what caused the delay for the customers in Lettered Streets.

u6/13/26 12:30 PM Update: 10 households in the Lettered Streets neighborhood are still without power.

BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Power has returned for most of Bellingham following an outage in the downtown area on Saturday, June 13.

The outage was first reported to Puget Sound Energy (PSE) at 8:47 a.m.

Most of the area’s power returned by noon. The cause is still under investigation.

Over 4,000 customers were impacted by the power outage that encompassed much of the Sehome, Lettered Streets and Sunnyland neighborhoods in addition to downtown.

More updates will be available from PSE later Saturday.
