BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Bellingham Public Schools is starting several big projects as much of the district’s future remains in limbo.

The district announced that work is underway on its new Community Transitions Building on the Whatcom Community College campus. The facility will serve students ages 18 to 22 who receive Special Education services and is expected to be finished by 2027.

Meanwhile, Squalicum High School is set to undergo major upgrades this summer, including a new roof and gym equipment.

Along with that, the district said it’s moving forward to complete design work and submit a permit for the new Roosevelt Elementary School. No decision has been made on a start date for construction.

It comes as the district is considering elementary school closures among other budget-saving measures in the face of declining enrollment and reductions in state funding.

The Facility Planning Task Force had its final meeting last week and is expected to release its recommendations later this week.
