OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Washington state has reached two settlements with a popular online banking app.

Attorney General Nick Brown announced Wednesday, July 8 that the state has settled with Block Inc., the parent company of payment platform Cash App.

The AG’s office said they reached a $20 million settlement that resolved allegations that Block handled fraudulent unemployment deposits from Washington’s Employment Security Department during the pandemic.

Along with a multistate coalition, the state also resolved allegations that the company misled consumers about Cash App’s safety and failed to protect users from fraud.

Washington will receive $1.8 million in that settlement.

Brown claims Block promoted direct deposit of paychecks and government benefits without ensuring they could support users facing problems and potential fraud.

In addition to the monetary settlement, Block has also agreed to make changes to their policies and stop making misleading claims about their services.
