WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Kids ride the Lummi Island Ferry for free, and additional funding is now locked in.

The Whatcom County Council voted 7-0 on Tuesday, March 24 to approve more funding to keep ferry rides free for young passengers.

The council approved an amendment to a contract with the Washington State Department of Transportation, increasing reimbursement to just over $102,000 to cover the cost of those rides. The money comes from the state’s transportation budget.

County officials say the added funding helps support ferry operations while easing costs for families.

The agreement runs through June of 2027 and is fully funded by the state.
