FRIDAY HARBOR, Wash. – The San Juan Clipper passenger ferry won’t operate between Seattle and Friday Harbor this year.

The Seattle Times reports that service operator, FRS Clipper, announced that Coast Guard fire regulations have cut the number of passengers allowed on the ferry and it wouldn’t be profitable.

The Coast Guard tightened tour boat regulations following a deadly fire aboard a dive boat off the California coast in 2019.

The San Juan Clipper will require shipyard modifications and may return in 2023.

The Friday Harbor ferry cancellation doesn’t affect the Clipper’s service to Victoria, which resumed last month.
