BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A protest is scheduled Monday morning at the The Firs camp days after the Opportunity Council withdrew its kitchen lease with the organization for letting a camp counselor go due to his sexual orientation.
Protest organizer Cherrelyn Seegers tells KOMO hundreds are expected to join the peaceful and silent demonstration at 7:30am as parents are dropping off their children for camp.
“In a peaceful, loving way, we would really like to change hearts and minds . . . we would like for them to look inside themselves and look inside their organization, and ask themselves if this is really Christ-like,” she says.
The Executive Director of The Firs, Tom Beaumont, writes on their Facebook they’ve gotten that reaction from many, and says despite standards for employees, campers only ever hear that God loves them, no matter what.
As the camp approaches the 100-year mark, Beaumont says they will review policies and procedures and continue to listen to the community.
He says campers are still their main priority and the camp is still “totally accepting and welcoming to everyone” who attends its programs.
