MOUNT VERNON, WA. – (KGMI.com) A pipeline leak has temporarily closed a Skagit County elementary school and nearby roads.

Skagit County Emergency Management says that the gas leak from the Olympic Pipeline was discovered around 6:30 Sunday morning, December 10th.

Conway Superintendent Jeff Cravy said that due to the pipeline’s proximity to the Conway School, the K-8 school will be closed on Monday, December 11th.

Cravy adds that they will reopen on Tuesday but warns families to prepare for extra traffic in the area.

Crews from the Environmental Protection Agency and Washington State Department of Ecology are working to contain the spill.

A portion of State Route 534 between Cedardale Road and Bulson Rd is closed, but part of that area could reopen to one lane of traffic later today.

In 1999, the Olympic Pipeline spilled almost 300,000 gallons of gasoline into Whatcom Creek in Bellingham, causing an explosion that sent a massive fireball through the heart of Bellingham.

That explosion killed two young boys who were playing along the creek and an 18-year-old who was fishing upstream.
