SEATTLE, Wash. (AP) — Former Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best has joined KING 5 as a law enforcement analyst, first appearing Monday.

She became Seattle’s first Black police chief more than two years ago.

Best retired last month amid a controversy over proposed police cuts and the department’s response to violent protests in the so-called CHOP zone and the abandonment of the police precinct there.

Since her retirement, police have been leaving the SPD at a high rate, fearing for their safety after staff cuts and citing low morale.

KIRO reports departing officers in exit interviews say they do not want to work in a city whose morals do not match their own, with many referring to the city council as socialist.

39 SPD officers quit or retired just last month, and 110 have left this year, a number higher than any year since at least 2012, according to the department.
