OLYMPIA, Wash. — Lynden Republican Luanne Van Werven is in peril of losing the seat she’s held in the state House of Representatives since 2015.

Democratic challenger Alicia Rule leads the early count in the race for 42nd District Position 1.

Van Werven says negative campaigning took a toll.

But Rule, who’s served on the Blaine City Council, says the district was ready for a change.

She leads the race by roughly 51 to 49 percent.

Meanwhile, Democratic State Representative Sharon Shewmake is ahead in the 42nd District Position 2 race.

She leads Republican newcomer Jennifer Sefzik.

Shewmake leads the race 52 to 48 percent,
