BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A Bellingham man accused of brutally murdering his mother before throwing her body in Lake Samish last July, was declared not competent to stand trial and must receive treatment.
The Department of Social and Health Services diagnosed Matthew Downey Gregory with schizophrenia and though frequently described as “polite” during his jail time, his behavior worsened last month and he was put in isolation.
On Thursday, the court ordered a continuance until Gregory can be admitted to Western State Hospital and undergo “competency restoration.”
