BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A man died while in custody of Bellingham Police officers early Thursday.
Lieutenant Mike Johnston says the 49-year-old man called 911 for assistance just after midnight and officers responded to the Drop In Center on West Holly Street.
Officers say he was acting paranoid and unstable, possibly due to a mental health issue or the influence of a drug.
He did calm down when they used de-escalation techniques, but then became agitated again.
The center wanted him tresspassed and officers had him in handcuffs when he suddenly went to the ground.
Medics were called and administered first aid but the man later died at the hospital.
The man used more than one name and investigators are trying to positively identify him.
An autopsy is planned next Tuesday.
The Whatcom County Sheriff’s office is assisting the investigation, and the police department says officer body camera video will be released along with the man’s identity.
