BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A man with a record of felony convictions had a busy few days that ended in the Whatcom County Jail.

Police Lieutenant Claudia Murphy says Kyle Berard climbed into a woman’s Prius while she was inside the AM/PM store on Meridian Street last Thursday.

She screamed for a friend who grabbed a handgun from his car and ordered Berard out.

They struggled, the gun dropped into the car and Berard drove off.

He went to Kendall where he traded the gun for heroin, then was off to the Northwoods Casino to get cigarettes out of ashtrays to smoke on the way back to Bellingham.

A State Patrol trooper foiled that by pulling him over, but he fled then ditched the car and ran.

He spent the night in a stranger’s garage, then got a ride to Bellingham where he stole clothing from a Fred Meyer store.

He was caught while taking tags off the stolen clothes.
