Day 28 of Run 31, and today’s mile belongs to two people from one family – Carol, and her daughter Korissa.
“I lost my aunt Carol and cousin Korissa to breast cancer. My cousin died at the age of 20, and my aunt died within the same year.”
– Heather, who nominated them

A mother and a daughter, in the same year
Korissa was twenty years old when she died. Her mother, Carol, died within that same year.
One family lost a twenty-year-old and her mom inside twelve months. Heather is Korissa’s cousin, and she’s the one who sent us their names.
What Heather wanted us to know about them
When Heather came on with us this morning, she spent most of the conversation talking about how joyful the two of them were. That’s the word she kept using. Not the diagnosis, not the timeline – just what they were like to be around.
We think that’s the right place to start, so we’re starting there too.
What’s changed in their family
Heather told us that losing Carol and Korissa has opened up conversations in her family that weren’t happening before. About screening, about family history, about paying attention to things people usually put off.
She also said the two of them still have an impact on her everyday life – not just on anniversaries, but in regular days.
So in a real way, Carol and Korissa are still getting people in their family to go get checked.
And Heather started running
The day she sent us their names, she went out and ran. She told us she’d keep going, to honor their lives. She has.
Carol, Korissa – today the rest of us ran for you too.
Run for them. Get screened for you.
