Day 26 of Run 31, and today’s mile belongs to Monica – who fought for eight years so she could be there for four boys.
“She persisted on.”

Eight years
Monica was a breast cancer survivor for eight years. That’s the word her sister Nicole uses, and it’s the right one – because for eight years, she survived it.
Multiple surgeries. Treatments. Then the cancer moved to her brain, and it started over: more surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation. Then the things nobody warns you about – an infection, a reaction to the sutures, wounds that would not heal.
Any one of those would be a hard year. Monica had eight of them, stacked end to end.
What she was fighting for
Four boys.
That’s the part Nicole wanted us to lead with, and it reframes everything else on this page. The surgeries, the infusions, the recoveries that didn’t go the way they were supposed to – Monica went through all of it because every round bought her more time with her sons.
She wasn’t fighting an abstraction. She was fighting to be in the room.
How her sister says it
There’s a way people usually talk about this, and Nicole didn’t use it. She didn’t say Monica lost anything. She wrote this:
“After 8 years her pain ended. We miss our sister, mother, daughter, wife, friend.”
Five words for one person. That’s what a life looks like from the inside of a family – not a diagnosis and a date, but five different people who all lost someone different.
Thank you, Nicole, for getting up early and telling us about her. We know what that costs.
Monica, today we move for you. And for your boys.
Run for them. Get screened for you.
