We ask for them every holiday and birthday, but are your gift cards collecting dust? Right now, $21 billion in un-redeemed gift cards are just sitting in our wallets. A Bankrate survey found that the average adult has $167 in unused gift cards and store credit. Parents with kids under 18 have larger amounts stacking up, with an average of $274 on their gift cards. Financial experts encourage you to use your gift cards soon after receiving them, the longer you keep them the more likely they are to be misplaced and never redeemed.
