WHS Wildlife release: Great Horned Owl!

Scotty and I had the chance to bring our families to a wildlife release at Whatcom Humane Society’s farm facility this weekend. It was the first visit to the the farm for all of us.

This beautiful Great Horned Owl was found injured in Everson a couple months ago, apparently shot in the wing. After lots of rehab work, it was time to send her back out into the world.

Alysha Elsby is the Licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator who nursed this owl back to health. Check out this short video to hear her explain how the owl got there and see the owl’s release back into the wild.

After the owl made its way in to the woods, we had the chance to tour the farm. We all fell in love with this foal, named Forrest, who was born with front legs that don’t work right. Whatcom Humane Society is working to strengthen his legs and he’s expected to walk and run normally when he grows up.

Forrest has special shoes that make his legs stronger but he’s figured out how to take them off. They were being repaired during our visit so Forrest had his legs wrapped up until his shoes are ready.

There are lots of horses at the WHS farm, many available for adoption to the right homes. These two, Molly and Pete, need a home together. Molly has cataracts and doesn’t see very well. She depends on Pete to get around. Pete is Molly’s seeing eye horse! They’re very bonded and it would be a real shame to have to separate them.

Our sincere thanks to the Whatcom Humane Society, not only for inviting us to see this majestic owl back into the wild, but also for all the great work they’re doing for the critters of Whatcom County!
