Are you getting enough vitamin D? Here’s the scoop:
We obtain vitamin D from sunlight, certain foods, and supplements. Though frequently touted as a miracle cure, randomized controlled trials—the gold standard of research—reveal it is not effective in preventing or treating most conditions studied such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, or obesity.
Vitamin D is crucial for maintaining good bone health and preventing diseases caused by deficiency. It also helps prevent asthma flare-ups and worsening symptoms in people with chronic respiratory illnesses. Interestingly, while vitamin D can help treat depression, it won’t prevent it. On the other hand, it can help prevent respiratory infections but not treat them.
Remember, balance is key. Too much or too little vitamin D can increase your risk of falls. Aim for an optimal dose between 1600mg and 3200mg per day.
Just as I discuss various topics with my patients during their wellness visits, it’s crucial to adopt a balanced approach, including how we manage vitamin D intake.
