Today we’re chatting about a few ways to protect yourself online! First and foremost, try to stick to reputable sites to make your purchases. Be very wary of links to places to purchase something you find on social media.
- When making a purchase, look for ‘https’ in the address instead of just ‘http,’ it means the site owner has at least taken some steps to safeguard your info.
- While you’re at it, see if the address bar has a padlock at the front of it. This indicates that the site is equipped with SSL encryption, which also protects you.
- Scan the domain name…make sure it doesn’t have like two ‘n’s in Amazon or two ‘a’s’ in Target. Scammers can set up copycat websites that spoof real ones.
- And finally, when in doubt, reach out. The Better Business Bureau has an online scam tracker. Or you can see if there are any yelp reviews. And some experts say just type in the company name into google with the word ‘scam’ after it and see if anything comes up!
