There are two ways to be smart with your money: Make more or spend less. Let’s focus on that second one.
These are some things we buy and then rarely if ever use. You may want to think really hard before spending any money on these:
1. Cookbooks. It’s easy to pick up an interesting one you see in the checkout line. But do you use it really? Or do you actually get your recipes online?
2. Home gym equipment. When covid hit, sales of Peloton bikes jumped 170%. But if you don’t use it for more than a coat rack, it was a waste of money.
3. Excessive stuff for your kids. New parents buy all sorts of things they don’t really need. Happens with new pets too.
4. Extended warranties. When was the last time you needed to use one? And if you do, do you even remember that you bought one?
5. Journals and daily planners. Sounds like a good idea. But most people buy one, use it for a week, and never use it again.
6. Filing cabinets. Just like journals, you plan to use them but never do. Besides, it makes much more sense to store things on your computer now.
7. Specialty appliances. Like a breakfast sandwich maker, or a toaster that only cooks hot dog buns. They take up too much counter or cupboard space so, we tend to put them away and forget about them.
8. Souvenirs. Sure, you want to remember your vacation. But are you really going to cherish that dumb key chain or coffee mug months from now?
9. Online subscriptions for specific things. Like alumni websites that help you keep in touch with people from high school. That’s what Facebook is for.
10. Over-the-top camping gear. Things like powered, rotating marshmallow sticks get used once, then never again.
