The BEST eclipse viewing tips!

First, if you don’t have the proper glasses to view the eclipse, you can still grab a free pair at Dr. Hofnagle’s office at 911 N. Forest St in Bellingham.  Thanks to Dr. Hofnagle for stocking up with 1000 pairs to hand out to the community! (no longer available!)

(If you’re out shopping for your own, be sure to check out our tips on getting the right ones HERE).

Second, if you want to watch the eclipse alongside a NASA astronaut and NASA scientist, you’re in the luck! The City of Ferndale is teaming up with the Ferndale Library and Ferndale School District to hook you up with a great eclipse viewing opportunity.  Check out the Bellingham Reddit thread HERE to get more info.

Third, if you want to find out what the eclipse will look like in your neighborhood, there’s a great map and some infographics HERE that will tell you what percentage of eclipse you’ll see and what path it’s taking!

And , finally, a couple things you SHOULDN’T DO during the eclipse from Forbes.com

1.) Do not waste your time with pictures! The period of actual totality is brief, and the experience won’t happen again for years!

2.) If you’re lucky enough to be in the area of totality, do not leave your eclipse glasses on. As soon as you cannot see the sun through your glasses, take them off.

3.) Be sure to stop viewing the sun through binoculars/telescopes before totality ends. Looking at direct sun for even a split second through binoculars/telescopes can blind you forever.

4.) Experience the eclipse with all your senses–don’t rely solely on your eyes. The temperature will drop; nocturnal animals may emerge; street lamps light up; birds fall silent.

5.) Don’t do one thing exclusively. Take in the Sun’s active corona, the entire sky, the stars and planets, and the shadowed, dark Earth before totality ends.
