This week’s Green Thumb Thursday tip is to plant cover crop seed NOW! Nancy said last week would’ve been better, but there’s still time!
There are several options to choose from and they all grow fast this time of year. One of our favorites is Crimson Clover because of the beautiful, red flowers. Rye is also very popular because it is super fast.
Why do we plant cover crop over our veggie beds? To protect your soil from erosion and compete with weeds. It adds large amounts of organic matter and fixes nitrogen in the soil. Most importantly, you are creating healthy soil…and healthy soil equals healthy plants.
Even though we are in mid-September, it’s not too late to plant lettuce, chard, kale, and spinach…as well as lots of herbs and fall plants like mums and pansies.
