We’re supposed to make as few trips to the grocery store as possible these days. So, how do you keep your fresh food from going bad? Here are a few tips for making your food last longer:
1. To keep your lettuce or spinach fresher longer, put a paper towel in with it. It absorbs moisture and keeps it from getting all soggy and disgusting.
2. Let your block of cheese get a tiny bit of air. Put it in something more breathable than a plastic bag, like wax paper. Then put that whole thing inside a plastic bag but leave it partially open. It’ll last longer and taste better.
3. Freeze your broth. Lots of recipes only need a little bit of chicken stock, but you have to buy it in large containers and it doesn’t keep very long. If you freeze the rest in ice cube trays, it’s easy to use small amounts of it later.
4. Same thing with fresh herbs – You only need a little and the rest doesn’t last. You can make them last longer if you store them the same way you store fresh flowers. Put them upright in a glass with a bit of water in the bottom. It’ll give them a little extra life.
5. Dry your produce after you wash it. Dry it really well. Normally it’s better not to wash it until just before you eat it. But right now you should wash it immediately because of the virus. So be sure to dry it really well, so the extra moisture doesn’t make it rot faster.
