Most people have this idea that they’re somehow protected by laws against false advertising. But in fact corporations have gone to court many times for the LEGAL RIGHT to use deliberate deception in advertising. To help you be a smart consumer, here are a few ways they get away with it….
1. Cell phone coverage maps. It’s basically impossible for you to prove that a company doesn’t have coverage in a certain spot. So they lie on the maps.
2. Food serving sizes. They change the serving sizes randomly, so you assume a package is one serving when it’s not. Healthy Choice makes a soup-in-a-cup that’s 90 calories per cup . . . but the cup-shaped package is TWO CUPS.
3. Bogus health benefits. Experts say Bee pollen doesn’t do anything, and acai berries are no healthier than other berries. Companies will make any health claim people will believe.
4. Making a food SOUND healthy when it’s not. A favorite trick for junk food is to point out the ONE unhealthy ingredient that it DOESN’T have. Products that boost they have 0% trans fat . . . gets them off the hook for all the OTHER fat and sugar
