For most people, it’s tough to get a nap in because of those silly things called jobs. But for those of us lucky enough to catch a few quick Zs in the middle of the day, here are a few tips to get the most out of them:
1. Try to schedule your nap for the same time every day. Earlier works better because it’s less likely to keep you from falling asleep at bedtime.
2. 20 to 25 minutes is the ideal nap length. Sleeping longer than that is likely to make you wake up feeling groggy and cranky.
3. Get the room dark and quiet. Close your blinds and turn off the lights and TV.
4. Nap in your bed, not on the couch. You’ll fall asleep faster. Plus, your family is more likely to wake you up if you take a nap on the couch than if you’re in bed.
5. Smell the place up! Apparently, people sleep better and feel more alert if they fall asleep to the smell of lavender. Try buying some lavender incense or an air freshener. The more you do it, the more your brain will associate the smell with falling asleep.
