Open a separate account to help keep your hands off some of your cash. Use your main checking account for regular expenses, including your rent or mortgage, utilities, food and some entertainment. But think of your savings account as off limits. If you set up small, automatic transfers to your savings account, you won’t even notice the money is missing from your checking account every month. It’s important to pay yourself first with that transfer because if you wait till the end of the month, you may have nothing left over to put in to that savings account.
