It’s Lucy from My Garden Nursery!
Do you have a veggie garden? Let the experts at My Garden Nursery teach you how to companion plant edible flowers around your edibles to bring the bees and other beneficials in.
Plant borage so it grows tall stalks full of blue star flowers that the bees love…and you can eat! They taste like cucumber! This plant draws up nutrients like nitrogen, calcium, and potassium from the depths of your soil. When it grows tall, cut some down and tear the leaves into a green mulch to boost your soil biome.
Surround your salad greens with sweet alyssum, a low-growing white or purple flower that smells and tastes like peppery honey and blooms in full to partial sun. This non-stop bloomer lures beneficial insects like ladybugs, lacewings, and hoverflies that prey on pests like aphids, whitefly, and more.
Plant marigolds with your tomatoes for similar benefits. Their strong scent repels flying pests, and root chemicals deter harmful soil nematodes. Sprinkle the yellow, orange, and red petals on top of your salad for an herbal, peppery garnish.
Line the perimeter of the garden with nasturtiums to lure aphids and whitefly away from your edibles. These vibrant, spicy edible flowers attract beneficials to the garden and can act as a trap crop to draw pests away from vulnerable veggies. Just routinely spray aphids off with water or soap to suppress the pests or introduce beneficial insects like live ladybugs, green lacewings, or predatory mites that are sold at My Garden Nursery!
