Hi, it’s Jenny from My Garden Nursery! Have you planted any veggies yet? We planted peas the first week of March and they are almost 12″ up the trellis.
Our lettuce is doing great because we keep it covered with frost cloth and a simple hoop system that my husband, Bill designed.
Next, we will plant Little Finger Carrots. So good they don’t need any salad dressing. Plant carrots directly into your garden in soil that is free of rocks and debris. Carrots can take a few weeks to germinate so make sure the soil where the seeds are at remains moist.
Bill potted up one Sungold and one Brandywine tomato and they will stay in our little greenhouse until it’s a bit warmer. Tomatoes like heat. Plant your tomato starts with at least 6″ of the stem underground (with the leaves trimmed off) as the hairs along the stem are roots and will grow quickly underground giving your tomato plants a stronger base. Feed and water tomatoes regularly all season long.
There are two different types of tomatoes -“Determinate” which grow to about 4′. Some favorites include Legend and Oregon Spring.
The other category is “Indeterminate.” Both Sungold and Brandywine that Bill planted are in this category and will grow up to 10′ and will produce continually until frost. Add a tomato cage or trellis early in the process to provide support for your tomatoes.
