GREEN THUMB THURSDAY: Taking the Mystery Out of Heather

This is Jenny from My Garden Nursery!  I am going to take the mystery out of Heathers and Heaths in 60 seconds… Go!

Heathers, also called Calluna, bloom in August and September.  Our favorite, Firefly, is a glorious green color with deep mauve-colored flowers and the foliage can turn red in winter.

Erica, aka heaths, bloom in winter.  Both are winter hardy in Bellingham and evergreen.  Both are low maintenance and deer usually pass them by and often will bloom twice a year.  Plant one in your fall winter container and underplant with bulbs.  For height, add a newer plant called Drimys, also called pepperberry.  The contrast of its beautiful red stems and the texture of its deep green leaves looks stunning next to heathers and heaths.
