Hey, this is Tony at My Garden Nursery…the fun, friendly, and colorful garden center with the purple flamingoes!
Watering plants is especially important during the summer because higher temperatures, stronger sunlight, and increased evaporation quickly reduce the moisture in the soil. Adequate watering helps plants stay healthy and continue growing despite the heat.
Water is needed for nutrient transport and without enough water, plants may stop growing or produce fewer flowers and fruits. Plant roots absorb nutrients dissolved in water. Dry soil can limit access to these nutrients, leading to poor health and yellowing leaves.
Well-watered plants cope better with high temperatures, compared to drought-stressed plants that may wilt, scorch, or become more vulnerable to pests and diseases. For vegetables and fruit-bearing plants, consistent watering helps produce larger, healthier harvests and prevents problems such as blossom-end rot in tomatoes.
TIPS FOR WATERING IN SUMMER:
•Water deeply rather than frequently to encourage deeper root growth.
•Water early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation.
•Apply mulch around plants to help retain soil moisture.
•Check soil moisture before watering; not all plants need the same amount of water.
•Pay extra attention to plants in containers, as they dry out faster than those planted in the ground.
