Hi! It’s Jenny from My Garden Nursery! This week’s weather is what I would call perfect gardening weather. Not too cold and not so hot is stresses any plants you are adding to your garden. It is also perfect weather for something else. Our dreaded NW SLUGS.
Slugs love cool moist weather so here are 5 tips to try to keep them from eating all your emerging tiny lettuce starts, dahlias and hostas:
1. Water your garden in the morning. Slugs are active at night so this will give your garden a chance to dry out during the day and not be as appealing to slugs.
2. Add bird feeders, birdbaths, ponds that will encourage slug predators like birds, frogs and other wildlife into your garden where they will lunch on slugs that are trying to eat your little sprouts. Place a board that you promise yourself you will check daily and remove any slugs that gather there.
3. Go slug hunting after dark with a flashlight and dispose of all the slugs you find.
4. Sprinkle Sluggo around your plants. It is known to be safe for pets and kids but does need to be reapplied after the rain.
5. Apply copper tape around little seedlings as slugs will not cross over copper. Well, yes, they sometimes do. Maybe two strips of copper tape is better than one. Want to talk about slugs or anything else.
