GREEN THUMB THURSDAY: Everything Hydrangeas!

Hi! It’s Jenny from My Garden Nursery.

Hydrangeas are in their full blooming glory right now! Here’s a quick glimpse into this interesting plant! There are 6 main types of hydrangeas: smooth, panicle, lace cap, oak leaf, climbing and mop head.

Smooth is the Annabelle-type hydrangea with almost round flowers, some bigger than your head. Incrediball is a big, white one and mini-mauvette is a beautiful, new, compact, mauvy one.

Panicle types are amazing with colors that start white and turn to red on some. Little Lime and Pinky Winky are some of our faves. Panicles and smooth hydrangeas can tolerate more sun than other types.

Lacecaps are gorgeous. We like White Wave, Red Tuff Stuff and Blue Bird.

Mop heads are the most popular and can be grown in most part shade situations. We love Nikko Blue and Onyx Flamingo

Oak leaf hydrangea leaves have amazing fall color and are not quite as fickle about water.

One of the few vines that can grow in the shade is the Climbing Hydrangea. It’s slow to start, but then aggressive and can grow up a cedar tree.

All hydrangeas like acidic soil and have beautiful flowers that last a very long time! Visit the experts at My Garden Nursery to learn more!

Here are 3 fantastic Hydrangea choices:

Pinky Winky starts white in mid-summer and then as summer progresses the lower part of the flower turns pink, kind of like an ombre. These spectacular flowers can get up to 16″ long! It is very sturdy and grows to about 6-8 tall and wide. Pinky Winky can tolerate sun.

Onyx Flamingo is an eye-catching newer plant with the blackest stems and bright pink/ blue flowers depending on the acidity of your soil. The flower is a large but more flat type of mop head. It will be a Wonderful addition to any garden that can provide filtered sun. It has a compact habit and can be grown in a container. It will make an excellent cut flower.

Nikko Blue is an old but dependable variety that gets to about 6′ by 6′. Flower color depends on the acidity of the soil. Everybody loves this pretty mophead hydrangea.

Most Asked Questions:

How do I change the color of my Hydrangea?

White hydrangeas will always be white but most blue or pink hydrangeas can have their colors changed by adding either Aluminum sulphate for blue to purple or lime to the soil for pinker. Many hydrangeas in the Northwest are blue because they grow in the acidic soil underneath cedar trees. You can also add Gardner & Bloome Acidic Soil  mix or Growmore Hydrangea Blueing Formula.

How do I make my Hydrangeas flowers last?

Wait until the flowers are fully open. It is best if they are starting to turn color. Cut in the morning after a day of rain or at least well watered. Cut the stem above a node at least 12″ long. Have a vase with 1 to 2″ of water ready. After removing all of the leaves do a fresh angled cut halfway between the bottom 2 nodes of your stem. Make sure when placing your flower in the vase that it is in the water. Keep inside in a dark cool area. In a month or 2 they should be dry.
