The experts at My Garden Nursery were listening to KAFE This Morning earlier this week and heard Dave & Patrice talking about garden soil vs. potting soil. They mentioned not knowing there’s a difference. BUT…there IS! It’s a pretty normal misconception unless you spend a lot of time at a nursery.
Here’s the scoop:
When you’re planting containers, use potting or raised bed soil. They are a well-draining, lighter mix with organic fertilizers like chicken manure, kelp meal, earthworm castings, bat guano, and perlite. Some soils have peat moss added, but there’s a new product at local nurseries, including My Garden Nursery, called Beyond Peat with Bio-Fiber that claims it produces up to 25% more air space than peat moss for stronger root development.
Graden soil, or in-ground planting mixes, are fortified and blended in a way that allows it to mix with our native soils and grow better plants.
Either way, good soil is the BEST thing we can do for our gardens!
