This week’s Green Thumb Thursday is all about preparing your Dahlias for winter.
Whether you need to dig your Dahlias or leave them in the ground depends on where you live and what zone. Dahlias can freeze, if not mulched, or rot without sharp drainage.
If you leave them in the ground, be sure to cover with about 4 inches of mulch. If you dig the tubers, do so as early as right now up to first frost. Cut down to about 5-inch stems, let them dry for about a week, and then dust off excess soil. Store flat between layers of newspaper or cardboard…or put roots up in paper bags. OR…cover with shavings from the pet store. Check monthly for insects or mold. Some people even recommend spraying with water about every month.
To sum it all up: Dig or don’t…cedar chips or none…paper bags or paper…and water or drought. Easy!
