Hi, it’s Jenny from My Garden Nursery! We have all heard stories about someone planting bamboo and how it took over their entire yard!
There are two main types of bamboo: running and clumping. Unless you have a lot of acreage, I recommend clumping bamboos like Fargesia.
They make an excellent screen. One of the most elegant yet simple things I have seen in a garden is a Fargesia red dragon planted in a red container. Fargesias range in size from about 6′ to 15′ and canes are in colors of yellows to blues to red!
Even Fargesias can spread so plan wisely. They are mostly evergreen and can take sun to shade. Give them supplemental water in the heat of summer. They will benefit from a nitrogen-based or fish fertilizer. You can prune your bamboo by cutting select canes to the ground. Tony at My Garden Nursery has a favorite bamboo named Campbell. I am told Pandas bears like that one too!
