GREEN THUMB THURSDAY: All About FERNS!

It’s Jenny from My Garden Nursery!  This week’s Green Thumb Thursday is ALL ABOUT FERNS!

Three fabulous evergreen ferns are the Deer fern, Tassel fern, and the Sword fern.

Most everyone is familiar with the sword fern. It is a deep green native that will grow about 3′ x 3′ in most gardens.  Give it shade to part-shade and adequate moisture.

Deer fern, another beautiful evergreen native, grows 18″ – 30.” You will love seeing it push out new growth in the spring! Plant in your shady to part-shady garden in rich moist soil.

Tassel fern only gets to about 2′ x ‘2 and can be grown in the ground.  They’re also great for a mixed shady container.  It can take shade or filtered sunlight.

All ferns benefit from a layer of compost and consistent moisture, but these three can be drought tolerant once established.

Here are a few BONUS “fern facts:”

1. Japanese Painted Ferns – Athyrium bring dramatic colors to your shady garden. Choose from varieties with grays, pinks, purple, or blacks…all overlaid on a bluish-green canvas.  Give shade to part-shade and keep moist.  Painted ferns are deciduous.

2. Autumn ferns – Dryopteris e. ‘Brilliance is a bold and beautiful choice for dappled sunlight to deeply-shaded areas. Brilliance is a coppery red fern that is perfect for a fall planter or in the ground.

3. Himalayan Maidenhair fern – Adiantum venustum has elegant, lacy fronds on black stems.  Can be used as a focal point in a shady garden.
