It’s Jenny at My Garden Nursery! Have you heard of Abutilon? It’s also known as Chinese lantern or flowering maple.
They have maple-shaped leaves and are considered a tropical shrub that blooms from now until frost! The prolific flowers look similar to the tropical red, yellow, orange, or pink hibiscus flowers…but abutilons hang down like beautiful crepe paper lanterns.
No need to deadhead, but they will flower longer if you remove the seed heads. The flowering maple is an absolute hummingbird magnet and is easy to propagate. When the weather gets cold, winter over inside your home or in your greenhouse (if you are lucky enough to have one).
Speaking of lucky, a couple varieties available now at My Garden Nursery are Lucky Yellow, and Voodoo Red. Give them full sun to part shade, feed often, and use Neem if they get pests.
