If you’re new to vegetable growing, you may be wondering exactly what to do this time of year. Jenny and the experts at My Garden Nursery have a couple of “September To Do’s” they want to share!
- Plant cover crop seed over any vegetable bed you will not be replanting this fall. There are several options to choose from. One of their favorites is Crimson Clover, with its beautiful red flowers. Rye is also popular because it grows super fast. If you can’t decide, go with a 5-way mix. Planting cover crop over vegetable beds help protect soil from erosion, hold moisture in, and adds large amounts of green manure. Most importantly, you’re creating healthy soil. Healthy soil = the BEST plants.
- September is great for planting cold crop herbs and veggies like parsley, lettuce, Swiss chard, and Brussels Sprouts (because they get sweeter with the cold weather). Fresh Brussels Sprouts roasted in olive oil, sea salt, black pepper, balsamic and honey. Mmmmmmm!
