It’s Jenny from My Garden Nursery!
As the days get shorter it’s easy to assume the garden is winding down. But November is actually when some plants begin to shine.
One of my favorites is Sarcococca. An easy evergreen shrub that thrives in part shade, needs very little water once it’s established, and in winter it fills the air with a rich vanilla scent you can smell from across the walkway.
Another winter star is Winter Jasmine. It grows beautifully along a sunny wall or fence, and just when you’re sure winter will never end — BOOM — bright yellow flowers. It’s a perfect way to bring light to the gray months.
And the plant everyone is asking for right now is the Winter Rose, also known as Hellebore. These evergreen, deer-resistant beauties come in a huge range of colors — soft pinks, whites, and speckled maroons. Many have silver or patterned leaves, and they bloom for months. They prefer partial shade and pair perfectly with Hardy Cyclamen and Sarcococca.
Rhodies are setting buds now for spring, and Aucuba’s glossy, variegated foliage brightens dark corners.
