A 17-year-old kid in Hawaii lost his paddle while kayaking near Honolulu last Wednesday, and drifted out to sea. But an off-duty lifeguard who happened to know his family went searching and eventually rescued him. He searched in a zig-zag pattern for 100 miles.
A Coast Guard helicopter eventually spotted the kid at four in the morning, and the lifeguard was the closest to him. So he pulled him out of the water. The kid was out there for 12 hours and said it was nice to see a familiar face pick him up.
