This time of year, the Sasanqua Camellias are either cracking color, already blooming or heavily budded and ready to explode! The Japonica Camellias are the larger leafed, bigger, flowering type that are just getting ready to begin their spring show.
Sasanqua flowers are smaller, but often fragrant and get up to 6 to 10 feet tall. One of our favorites is Yuletide, with its heavy, blooming red flowers from December through February.
Japonica have larger flowers, often peony-like, and grow up to 12 feet or more. A favorite, Japonica Camellia, is Swan Lake with very large, white, semi-double peony-like flowers. The new growth on the leaves emerges with reddish, then turn a shiny dark green.
At My Garden Nursery, we recommend having both camellia varieties in your NW yard to provide color from fall to spring. They’re happiest in morning sun, in well-drained, slightly acidic soil, protected from the wind and afternoon sun.
