Be very careful if you are thinking about getting involved with prepaid debit cards. The concept seems simple. They allow consumers to load money onto the card and make purchases or cash withdrawals. They can also keep college students from overspending because they only allow you to spend what’s put on the account. However, there is a downside. Prepaid cards carry lots of fees. First, there’s a start up fee, then there are monthly maintenance fees, and other associated fees just for using it. So, the cards are good to keep you from overspending, but you may be spending more on fees than it’s worth.
