You know who has a lot of experience with being locked inside for long periods of time? ASTRONAUTS!
Space Station commander Chris Hadfield shared some pointers on YouTube about how to get through this without going crazy. And astronaut Scott Kelly also offered some great tips. Here’s how they say they stay sane:
1. Read up so you understand the situation. Don’t just be afraid. Be informed. Knowing what’s really going on can help you manage your anxiety. Just be careful not to get overly obsessed.
2. Make some goals and attack them. Plan out what you want to accomplish today, this week, and this month. It doesn’t have to be productive – a fun hobby is fine. It’s just important to have a plan.
3. Make a schedule and follow it. Structure really helps.
4. Give yourself a break. Pace yourself so you don’t get burned out. Scott Kelly says when he was on the Space Station, he binge-watched Game of Thrones twice. Have some fun.
5. Go outside. Obviously, they can’t do that in space, and it’s one of the things they say they miss the most. You can do that – just make sure you stay six feet away from other people.
6. Keep a journal. Nobody knows more about the effects of self-isolation than NASA and they say it’s one of the best cures for cabin fever.
7. Connect with the people you love. Video calls with friends and family are a really big deal for astronauts. These days, they can be for the rest of us too. We’re so lucky it’s so easy to connect online now. Hadfield says, “There’s never been a better time to self-isolate.”
