The experts at My Garden Nursery have made this week’s Green Thumb Thursday all about hellebores!
Also known as the Christmas Rose, hellebores are hearty, evergreen perennials that can bloom as early as November. Choose from pink, white, yellow, purple, even black or blue. Many of the newer varieties are being bred so that the flower is upright and tall. Some of the older varieties benefit from cutting off some of the deep, green leaves so that you can see the flowers better. They are some of the first flowers you will see in winter or early spring.
Hellebores make a great gift for any gardener on your list. They can be kept inside for a bit. Then, pop them into a container on your porch or into the ground, if the soil is workable.
Right now at My Garden Nursery, they have almost 40 different varieties. When you see them in a nursery, they may have a few beautiful blooms on them. But, the important thing to know is that in just a few years, these plants turn into a fabulous display with dozens of flowers on each plant. But be warned, they are kind of like potato chips…you won’t want to have just one.
