From the Skagit Valley College Music Department:
Based on the Gospel According to St. Matthew, Godspell is a modern-day retelling of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. The musical is structured as a series of parables brought to life through high-spirited games, storytelling techniques, and a hefty dose of comic timing. A wide variety of musical styles ranging from pop to vaudeville are used to tell the story of Jesus’ life set in modern social context.

The 2012 revised version Of Godspell features updated arrangements and contemporary references, following a small group of people as they are led by Jesus (accompanied by John the Baptist/Judas) to form a communal unit based on kindness, tolerance, and love. As the story progresses, the playfulness of the first act transitions into the more serious and haunting events of the Passion, including the Last Supper and the Crucifixion. Ultimately, Godspell is a celebration of community and a reminder of the enduring power of humanity’s better nature.
