WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A man convicted of providing a fatal amount of drugs to a Whatcom County Jail inmate has been sentenced.

39-year-old Angel Leffingwell was sentenced on Sept. 5 to over 10 and a half years in prison, followed by another three and a half years of community supervision.

Leffingwell was initially arrested in February on a DUI charge following a police chase. Weeks later, two inmates were found unresponsive in their cell after ingesting fentanyl provided to them by Leffingwell.

One of the inmates, 28-year-old Andre Haas, was later pronounced dead. Toxicology reports found fentanyl in his system.

Police have not disclosed how the drugs were able to get into the jail.
