BELLINGHAM, Wash. – An instructional assistant from Bellingham has won the state’s School Employee of the Year award.

Theo Mills has worked at Shuksan Middle School in Bellingham for the last 13 years.

She says instructional assistants have a special role in the school.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn says by addressing the needs of at-risk students and developing programs that meet their needs, Mills has decreased absences and discipline referrals.

She was picked out of nine school employees that won regional awards.
