Day 3 of State Tournament recap

Lynden girls vs. Ellensburg
The Lynden Lions needed overtime but was able to defeat Ellensburg, 53-48, in a 2A Girls Hardwood Classic third-place/fifth-place game Saturday at the Yakima SunDome.

Stephanie Somers had a game-high 19 points for the Lions, along with four rebounds and two steals. Elisa Kooiman added 14 points and Kaitlyn Mark had eight points.

The third-place finish was the highest finish at the state tournament for the Lions since the 2008-2009 season when Lynden captured the state championship.

Blaine girls vs. Cashmere
Taylor Vdovec scored 14 points and added eight rebounds but it wasn’t enough as the Blaine Borderites fell to the Cashmere Bulldogs, 50-37, in a 1A Girls Hardwood Classic third-place/fifth-place Saturday at the Yakima SunDome.

Alexis McElwain had a near double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Breanna Chau chipped-in seven points and seven rebounds for the fifth-place Borderites.

Cashmere’s Lauren Johnson had a game-high 24 points, hitting six of nine from long distance.

Blaine’s fifth-place finish is the first trophy for the Borderites since the 2003-2004 season.

Lynden boys vs. Pullman
Sterling Somers’s sparkling effort, with a game-high 22 points, wasn’t enough as the Lynden Lions were edged by the Pullman Greyhounds, 64-58 in overtime, in the 2A Boys Hardwood Classic State Championship game Saturday at the Yakima SunDome.

Somers also added six rebounds and two assists, along with his 22 points. Scott “Scooter” Hastings had 18 points and a game-high eight rebounds.  Jalani Phelps chipped-in 12 points for the second-place Lions.

Pullman lead 44-37 entering the fourth quarter but Lynden outscored the Greyhounds, 17-10, in the quarter and forced overtime on Somers’s three-pointer with under two seconds remaining.

Lynden’s second-place finish was the highest since the Lions won the 2A State Championship in the 2011-2012 season.

Lynden Christian vs. King’s
YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) — Tournament MVP Kara Bajema scored 13 points to lead four double-figure scorers as Lynden Christian beat King’s 55-40 on Saturday for the Class 1A girl state championship.

Courtney Hollander and Sally Vlas added 11 points each, and Sara Dougan chipped in 10 as the Lyncs built an early lead they never relinquished. Hollander led the defensive effort with 13 of her team’s 43 rebounds, and Dougan pulled down eight.

The Knights (24-5) pulled within two points late in the game, but LC (25-3) took control with a 17-6 run over the final period.

Karly Hibbard led King’s with 14 points and Julia Bernson scored 13.

Joining Bajema on the all-tournament first team was Hollander, Bernson, Lauren Johnson of Cashmere and Jill Townsend of Okanogan.
