The 1A and 2A prep basketball state tournament gets underway today in Yakima. As four teams from Whatcom County are vying for State titles.

Lynden vs. Port Angeles girls
On the girls side, the Lynden Lions (18-7) won their opener this morning beating Port Angeles 53-52 on KPUG. The Lions found themselves in an early hole down 13-2 after the first quarter. The Lions shot just 10% in the first half. But Lynden rallied back in the second half to take their first lead of the game with 3.3 seconds left when Lion Ashlyn Morgan hit a pair of free throws to ice the game.

With the win, Lynden advances to the semi-finals tomorrow against W.F. West at 3:35pm on KPUG.

Lynden Christian vs Granger girls
It was another game and another win for the Lynden Chrisitan girls, as LC dominated Granger from start to finish defeating the Spartans 63-40. The Lyncs, 23-3, were lead by guard Kara Bajema’s 18 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals. Lynden Christian was also got 13 points from Sally Vlas’s and Karley DeJager added 12 points.

With the victory, the Lyncs advance to the 1A semi-finals and will face the Cashmere Bulldogs on Friday at 7:15pm on KPUG.

The Bulldogs, ranked No. 1 in 1A, have already beat Lynden Christian this season in December at the Cloud 9 Christmas Classic at Lynden Christian High School.

Blaine vs. Mabton girls
The Blaine Borderite girls basketball continues to their journey to a state championship by defeating the Mabton Vikings, 43-27, in quarterfinal action at the 1A Hardwood Classic.
It was a balanced scoring effort for the Borderites, as four different players scored right points or more, with Mandy Hayes leading the way with 11.
Blaine ’s defensive showing was superb, limiting Mabton to 17% shooting and forcing eleven steals.
The Borderites victory places them in the 1A semi-finals and will play King’s, who is ranked fourth in 1A. The semi-final match-up is set for 9pm on Friday and can be heard on KGMI.
This is the first semi-final appearance for the Borderite girls since the 2002-2003 season.

Lynden vs Hockinson boys
Lynden knew right away that Hockinson wasn’t scared of Lynden’s prestige and tradition as a 2A basketball power. It was also obvious the Hawks weren’t bothered by Lynden’s clear size advantage. However, the Lions were able to pull through in a tough, physical game to win 50-43 over Hockinson.
The key to Lynden’s victory was their stout defense, holding the Hawks to under 28% shooting and blocking five shots.
Sterling Somers lead the Lions with 22 points and four rebounds. Scooter Hastings added 12 points and eight rebounds.
The Lions will face Lake Washington at 9:00pm on KPUG in the 2A semi-finals, a rematch of the District 1/2 Championship game that Lynden won.
This is Lynden’s third consecutive trip to the semi-finals.
