Jordan Phillips is a 13 year old girl from Athens, Ohio, who’s been sewing since she was five. She sews clothes, costumes, pillows, headbands, skirts, quilts… and two years ago, she started sewing her own coffee sleeves.
That last one is what this story is about. Because it happened when her family got some terrible news.
Jordan’s mom was diagnosed with breast cancer a couple years ago. Mom says it was a scary time for the whole family and Jordan desperately wanted to help.
Jordan was 11 at the time. And she did everything she could, helping with groceries, dishes, laundry and taking care of her two little brothers.
But then Jordan had an idea for another way she could help.
She started making and selling fabric coffee sleeves and donating the money to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. She called them, “Cozys for a Cure,” and it was a nice little fund-raising project.
It’s not so little anymore. Jordan’s “Cozys” have caught the attention of some pretty important people. Including the big-wigs at Walmart.
This fall, more than 200,000 Cozys for the Cure will be sold at more than 15-hundred Walmarts across the country.
There’s one more part of this story that feels good. Jordan’s mom is now completely cancer free. But Jordan isn’t stopping now. She wants to help other families… and she’s hoping you will too.
